Anne of the Airlanes

Anne of the Airlanes was one of several aviation radio dramas aired during the 1930's, but Anne Burton was the only female featured as a lead character. Airing between 1932 and 1951, the 15-minute serial aired 5 days a week. It was most likely inspired by the public's fascination with the real-life adventures of female pilot, Amelia Earhart.

Our heroine, Anne, worked as a hostess for Interstate Airlines and was also affiliated with the US Secret Service. Pilot Jack Baker was her love interest, and the co-pilot was the main contact for their undercover activities.

Each episode begins with the unmistakable sound of a propeller plane whirring across the skies followed by a rousing patriotic marching song, Then, the narrator interrupts with the stirring opening line, "Over Valley and Mountain, River and Plain, through Wind and Storm?rides Ann of the Airlanes."
